It is hard to talk about Ethiopia these days in non-apocalyptic terms. Millions of Ethiopians are facing their old enemy again for the third time in nearly forty years. The black horseman of famine is stalking that ancient land. A year ago, Meles Zenawi's regime denied there was any famine. Only 'minor problems' of spot shortages of food which will 'be soon brought under control', it said dismissively. The regime boldly predicted a 7–10 per cent increase in the annual harvest over 2007. Simon Mechale, head of the country's Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Agency, proudly declared, 'Ethiopia will soon fully ensure its food security.' |

When we think of saints the idea of victory comes to mind. We imagine of those people who have already won the battle of existence and are now enjoying the vision of God. With this kind of picture in mind, the idea of judgment is inevitable. The saints for us become those people who have been judged worthy in the eyes of God, and who are today models of holiness for us. The notion of judgment is somehow scaring, because it insinuates some kind of harshness, lack of mercy and even condemnation. This should however not scare anybody, because God is a judge by the fact that he is the ruler of the universe. |

If the people of Israel would have been asked while they were in Egypt, they would have answered that they never expected that their life and experience there and then would one day be used elsewhere by other people to manifest the relationship of God and his people. Today however, when we are faced with difficult challenges of life, we faithfully re-read the events of the life of the Israelites as written in the Bible, which demonstrate to us God’s faithfulness, and hence his commitment to be also with us. We are living our lives just as the Israelites lived it their time. |
