"When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from Heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they where sitting. Divided tongues, as a fire, appeared among them. And a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability" (Acts 2:1-4 NRSV). The Feast of Pentecost reminds us that there is a new dispensation of the Grace of God, renewing the Old Covenant. This new law is also granted through a marvellous experience, an impressive rush of wind and fire, which is granted not just for one people in particular but for all people in all times so that all tongues can speak of the wonders of God.

The weather had been extremely hot for weeks unending and not a drop of rain had fallen to quench the unbearable thirst of mother earth. Cracks wide and deep would scar the surface of the fields which had lovingly been tilled as of the wild grass land.
Many times I had complained that in the past three years of pastoral work in Embalenhle, I had never experienced a summer but now I couldn’t say so anymore and was praying for a respite from the heat-wave. The Lord seemed to have answered my prayer when on Thursday morning, as I walked out of the front door. I was hit by a cold winter wind which subsided with the appearance of the sun. |

My dear young friends! “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor…and come, follow me” (Mt 19:21).1. I was particularly eager to include a meeting with you during this my first journey to Latin America. I have come to inaugurate the Fifth General Conference of the Bishops of Latin America which, according to my wish, will take place at Aparecida, here in Brazil, at the Shrine of Our Lady. It is she who leads us to the feet of Jesus so that we can learn his teachings about the Kingdom, and it is she who stirs us up to be his missionaries so that the people of this “Continent of Hope” may have full life in him. |

Saturday, 12 May 2007 |
The fifth and last day of the 2007 UISG Plenary started with a call to prayer led by sisters from the South Pacific. The prayers, uttered and sung, were accompanied by images and texts projected on the big screens. An African blessing prepared the participants for the day’s events. The first draft of the Declaration was presented by the Writing Committee. After individual reflection and small group sharing, the members of the UISG pointed out the areas they agreed or disagreed with, what points were missed in the Declaration, what other aspects needed to be added, and suggestions to consider to make the declaration faithful to what the UISG has gone through during the Plenary. All these were given to the Writing Committee to help them in their work.
