WASHINGTON, October 12, 2007 CISA) - More than 100 senior Muslim leaders from around the world sent a letter to Pope Benedict XVI and other Christian leaders proposing similarities between the faiths as a basis for peace and understanding.

"Finding common ground between Muslims and Christians is not simply a matter for polite ecumenical dialogue between selected religious leaders," said 138 Muslim leaders in a letter released Thursday in Washington.

Christians and Muslims "make up more than 55 percent of the world's population, making the relationship between these two religious communities the most important factor in contributing to meaningful peace around the world," they said. "If Muslims and Christians are not at peace, the world cannot be at peace."

The world’s maternal mortality ratio (the number of maternal deaths per 100 000 live births) is declining too slowly to meet Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 5, which aims to reduce the number of women who die in pregnancy and childbirth by three-quarters by 2015.

While an annual decline of 5.5% in maternal mortality ratios between 1990 and 2015 is required to achieve MDG 5, figures released by WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA and the World Bank show an annual decline of less than 1%. In 2005, 536 000 women died of maternal causes, compared to 576 000 in 1990. 99% of these deaths occurred in developing countries.

2007: "All the Churches for all the world"
Mission Month - Pope's message
Written by Benedictus PP. XVI
Thursday, 11 October 2007
Dear Brothers and Sisters,

On the occasion of the World Mission Day, I would like to invite the entire People of God - Pastors, priests, men and women religious and lay people - to reflect together on the urgent need and importance of the Church's missionary action, also in our time.

Indeed, the words with which the Crucified and Risen Jesus entrusted the missionary mandate to the Apostles before ascending to Heaven do not cease to ring out as a universal call and a heartfelt appeal: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you". And he added, "Lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age" (Mt 28: 19-20).

The post-Independence era has witnessed the degeneration of faith in God among Ugandans. In his Independence Day message yesterday, the Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, said many people today practice Christianity and the African traditional religions simultaneously.

"Celebrating 45 years of independence, Uganda is presumed to be mature. Although several areas have matured in the last 45 years, some have degenerated. Our Motto, 'For God and my Country' seems not to be the norm."
