The light of Christ shines upon all!

We, Christian pilgrims from all over Europe and beyond, witness to the transforming power of this light, which is stronger than darkness, and we proclaim it as all-embracing hope for our Churches, for all of Europe and for the entire world.

In the name of our Triune God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we have assembled in the city of Sibiu, Romania (4th-9th September 2007). This third European Ecumenical Assembly was marked especially by the richness of Orthodox spirituality and tradition. We recall and renew the serious commitments we already made in Basel and Graz and we regret that, up to now, we have failed to fulfil some of them. However, our confidence in the transforming energy of the light of Christ is stronger than the darkness of resignation, fatalism, fear and indifference.

The Lighting Africa initiative includes the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation, other development organizations, local lighting suppliers and service providers, and the international marketplace.

The undertaking will use high-tech compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) powered by renewable energy sources like solar and wind power and micro gas and mechanical means like hand cranking and pedal power to illuminate homes, businesses, health centers and other sites that aren’t connected to the power grid.

The Vatican turned down a request by the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi to commence earlier than usual the beatification process for Maurice Michael Cardinal Otunga, it was revealed today.

Archbishop Raphael Ndingi Mwana ‘a Nzeki of Nairobi said the process will start five years after the death of his predecessor, as required by law. The Vatican has power to waive the five-year rule, as it did in the cases of Blessed Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II.

“We were advised to wait for five years, and we accepted the advice obediently,” Archbishop Ndingi told reporters at the Holy Family Basilica.

"Now more than ever, the unity of the churches in Europe is needed to bear witness to a future that transcends the vision of a common economic and political future, to embrace a future in which abundant life in Jesus Christ gives hope to all people, everywhere," said World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia, speaking in Sibiu, Romania on 5 September.

Kobia was addressing some 2500 delegates and other official participants from most European church traditions attending the opening session of the Third European Ecumenical Assembly, which he termed as the "single largest regular gathering of Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican and Protestant church leaders in the world".
