KENYA: Full Text of a Communiqué Issued by AMECEA

The executive board of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences of Eastern Africa (AMECEA) concluded its two-day meeting in Nairobi today, and issued the following communiqué:

1.0. To our brother bishops, priests, religious and all God’s people in AMECEA Countries (Eritrea, Ethiopia, Malawi, Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan, Uganda, Zambia and the affiliate members of Somalia and Djibouti) “Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 1:3).

We, AMECEA Patrons, members of AMECEA Executive Board, AMECEA Heads of Departments, gathered here in Nairobi at the AMECEA Secretariat from 30th to 31st August 2007 for our Executive Board meeting, wish to share with you some of the issues we discussed during the meeting.

Ethiopia: The Blessing of Shashemane Church

Shashemane (Sion Mariam) Parish was started in 1972. Since that time, it has seen a constant growth in the number of Christians, both in the Parish and in the outstations.

Due to this reason, the Parish Priest, Fr. Silvio Sordella (Imc) saw it necessary to expand the existing Church which could carry a capacity of 400 people. Recently the expansion work was completed and now the new Church has a capacity of about 700 people, well-seated.

Kenya: Fr. Joseph Rurunga’s Requiem Mass - Sagana Parish

On Wednesday, the 22nd August a Requiem mass was celebrated in Sagana parish for the late Fr. Joseph Rurunga who died three weeks ago in Mozambique. The mass was attended by around 30 priests including Consolatas and Diocesan clergy from Muranga and Nyeri Dioceses. Archbishop John Njue, the administrator of Muranga Diocese precided over the liturgy, assisted by Fr. Franco Cellana, Kenya Regional Superior and Fr. Cesare Molteni, the Parish Priest. Along with the clergy there was a huge turn-up by the local faithful. At the end of the mass many people gave their moving eulogies but one particular speech is worth sharing with the Consolata family. That was the one by Br. Gaetano Borgo. Archbishop warns Venezuela is heading towards dictatorship

Archbishop Baltazar Porras Cardozo warned Venezuelans this week that the constitutional reforms proposed by President Hugo Chavez are leading the country towards a dictatorship similar to the Castro regime in Cuba or the Pinochet regime in Chile.

The archbishop recalled that democracy is based on the balance of powers and that many of the reforms proposed by Chavez are inspired by Communism. What is even more dangerous, he said, is that the proposals would make Chavez another Pinochet or Castro, “who are not the models of democratic virtues.”
