The population growth rate in South Africa has taken a drastic plunge in recent years, with HIV/Aids-related deaths playing a lead role in the decline, say experts.

Statistics South Africa released its latest findings, which show that the population growth in the country has slowed down to 6.4% since 2001.

This is a significant drop from the 10.4% growth rate between 1996 and 2001.

The mid-year population estimates further show that 11% of the recently estimated 47.9 million people in South Africa are infected with the HIV virus.

On the 8th of July, Christians, guests from several places, Priests, Sisters, Bishop and some of us Consolata Missionaries with the Regional Superior, Fr. Antonio Vismara, were thrilled to attend the Celebration of the Annual Feast of “St Peter and Paul Parish”. Recalling a little bit our missionary history in Ethiopia, this Parish is the only one where we, Consolata Missionaries, are running in the Archdiocese of Addis Ababa.

It was a vibrant Celebration in Geese language, presided over by BrahneYesus, the Archbishop of Addis Ababa, and concelebrated by Mgr. Abraham Desta, Meki Bishop; Fr. Antonio Vismara, Our Regional Superior; and several priests from different places and Parishes.

Introduction

The Second Vatican Council, with its Dogmatic Constitution Lumen gentium, and its Decrees on Ecumenism (Unitatis redintegratio) and the Oriental Churches (Orientalium Ecclesiarum), has contributed in a decisive way to the renewal of Catholic ecclesiolgy. The Supreme Pontiffs have also contributed to this renewal by offering their own insights and orientations for praxis: Paul VI in his Encyclical Letter Ecclesiam suam (1964) and John Paul II in his Encyclical Letter Ut unum sint (1995).

Maria Consolata, Our Model of the Missionary beyond the third Millennium
News - Our Missionary tell us...

We focus and analyse some characteristics of Mary that could inspire us, on our pastoral methodology and spirituality as we celebrate this feast of our family.

Mary, Observant Missionary

Mary is very keen, and during the wedding at Cana, when wine lacks, she is the first to notice. She does not pack and leave, not stay quiet, but acts to save the situation. She is not indifferent. She is the True Model of Consolation. Mary gives us the force to move each moment to offer forgiveness, reconciliation, joy and peace to the afflicted. She is a Model of an Intercessor, the bridge between the people and Christ. She is courageous. Let us ask ourselves if we are also keen to the minor “lack of new wine in the people” – the Youth, the Old, the Sick, the Rich, the Marginalized, the Women?
