Floods from heavy rains across West Africa have damaged infrastructure and destroyed the homes or crops of up to 130,000 people, and caused more than 20 deaths, according to Hervé Ludovic De Lys, head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA).And the toll is expected to rise. “We are now reaching the most critical phase of the rainy season,” said De Lys, “as reservoirs, dykes, and rivers are now full to capacity.” |

More than five months after Zimbabwe's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) beat the ruling Zanu-PF into second place in elections, the country's three main political parties have reached an agreement to share power.
President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa confirmed at a news conference in Harare on Thursday night that a "unanimous agreement" had been concluded by all negotiating parties. The news conference was broadcast live in South Africa on satellite television channels. |

Almost 3 million children across the Horn of Africa are at risk of death, disease and malnutrition due to a combination of drought, rising food prices and conflict, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has warned.
The children are among the more than 14 million people in Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Kenya, Uganda and Djibouti that are critically affected, and the numbers are on an "alarming upward trajectory," according to UNICEF.

The Catholic Church in Europe will next week hold a conference on the pastoral implication of African migrants.
The conference comes in the wake of over 70 deaths off the coast of Malta of would-be African migrants to Europe. Reacting to the news last Sunday, Pope Benedict XVI said migration has become a global emergency that demands solidarity and effective political solutions. |
