Leaders of various religions discuss roots of communal conflict in Asia

Participants at a recent seminar highlighted the need to address religious exclusivism and poor socioeconomic conditions in order to reduce conflict between religious communities in Asia.

The delegates, who included about 20 religious leaders from Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Japan, Pakistan, the Philippines and South Korea, discussed religious conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Philippines.

Liberia: Govt warns Monrovia floods worst in city's history

Intense and heavy rainfall in the Liberian capital Monrovia on 20 July caused the worst floods on record in Monrovia and forced nearly 1,000 people out of their houses, Liberian authorities told IRIN.

All day Sunday, residents in eastern areas of the city including in Paynesville, Townhalk, King Gray, Fish Market and other communities were seen removing personal belongings like mattresses, clothes and pots from their homes. By the end of the day, flood water had blocked roads to the area, and government rescue workers were using canoes to evacuate the remaining people from the flood areas.

Africa: Catholic Congress to Study Culture and Church on Continent

Catholic leaders and scholars will meet to Bagamoyo to examine the pastoral prospects for new evangelization in the face of globalization and its effects on African cultures.

The congress, organised by the Pontifical Council for Culture, aims to provide a new impulse to the pastoral approach to culture, according to a statement from the council. Close attention will be paid to the evangelization of cultures, with a special emphasis on matters related to secularization.

The event will take place from July 23 to 26 at the Catholic Cultural Centre Bagamoyo, run by the Spiritan Fathers.

“In gratitude for the great love shown by Jesus Christ…,” the young men began the formula after Fr. Cellana’s sermon, “… and may I, by God’s grace and the loving intercession of Our Lady of Consolation…” they went on to the end. The assembly was so quiet that you could almost hear people breathing. The photographers almost suffocated the altar as each squeezed himself somewhere to take yet another shot of the profession novices.
