Korea: Buddhists Rally Against Government's 'Religious Discrimination'

Thousands of Buddhists have protested against what they perceive as government bias for Protestantism and against Buddhism.

On Aug. 27, Buddhists from all over the country gathered for an open-air Buddhist prayer and protest rally at a square in front of Seoul City Hall

The Korean Buddhist Orders' Association, which organized the rally, estimated 200,000 participants including around 10,000 monks. The police put the number at about 60,000.

On Friday 29th August 2008, we began our day with the mass animated by the formators from Mozambique and South Africa. In our prayer we remembered these two countries which have got different historical realities. We prayed in a special way for peace and reconciliation in South Africa for what took place some months ago (xenophobia). It was also a moment to remember our two late confreres (Fr. Alexius Lipingu and Fr. Joseph Rurunga) who have worked in these two countries and they were also formators. We believe that they intercede for us from Heaven.

Our faith always teaches us that life is the highest gift received from God. Since the creation, God gave especial vocation to each of us to be fulfilled. Some people received the vocation to get married; others to become missionaries or local priests, even consecrated lay... In this article, I would like to talk a little bit about one of us. He was young during that time in Verona. He felt humbly and freely the desire to serve God as Consolata Missionary. After years of formation in Italy, he became Consolata Missionary.

Peru: Indigenous Occupations End With Victory in Congress

On August 22nd, the Peruvian Congress repealed two legislative decrees at the root of the indigenous demonstrations that paralyzed various roads and energy installations from August 9th through 20th. The indigenous movement of the Amazon, home to 65 different indigenous nations, declared victory.

Background

Peruvian President Alan Garcia approved more than 100 legislative decrees in the first half of 2008, making use of special powers bestowed upon the Executive branch by the Congress in order to bring the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the US and Peru into effect.
