The distance between the rival armies is shorter than the barrel of a gun. Hundreds of opposing troops are lined up on the border, staring each other down, from just inches away.

On one side, are the Djiboutians, a relatively well-equipped African military with combat boots, CamelBak strap-on water bottles and the occasional buttery croissant in the field.

On 2008-05-18, some of us, Consolata Missionaries IMC and MC were so delighted to join our Confrere Deacon Ashenafi, his family, friends and faithful from different places in Ethiopia to attend his Priestly Ordination. The ceremony happened in his home parish in Wasera town. Many Catholics and some from other religions were present to the ceremony, especially since our Deacon was well known in his town. The Eucharistic Celebration was presided over by His Excellency Rodrigo Meija, S.J. and concelebrated by more than 15 priests: diocesans and missionaries. Before the conclusion prayer, Fr. Ashenafi briefed us on his vocational life, beginning from Ethiopia, his Country; then Kenya and Colombia where he spent some years for novitiate and theological studies. In two words, it was “Praising God”.

"Never, never and never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again experience the oppression of one by another…" The events we have witnessed in Alexandra, Tembisa, Johannesburg and other parts of the country give the beautiful words and healing vision of Nelson Mandela's 11 May 1994 inauguration speech a hollow ring today. No matter the underlying causes, no matter the accusations of blame that fly around, this is a scandal and a cause of shame. Our beautiful land once again experiences the oppression of one by another.

South African people, especially the youth, need Christian models. It is not enough to have some knowledge of the doctrine that many don't know; it is necessary to give our lives, as Jesus did. It seems that some clergy and lay people don't know what "generosity" and "self-giving" mean. "You received without charge, give without charge" (Mt.10:8) said Jesus.

"Community Serving Humanity" is the South African Pastoral Plan since 1989, and it is wonderful on paper, but it is still hard to implement, because human power suffocates the humble and generous hearts.

A rampaging mob in western Kenya burnt 15 women accused of witchcraft to death, a local official and villagers told AFP Wednesday.

"This is unacceptable. People must not take the law into their own hands simply because they suspected someone," said Mwangi Ngunyi, the head of Nyamaiya district. "We will hunt the suspects down," he added.

The gang of about 100 people moved from house to house late Tuesday, tied up their victims and set them ablaze, the official said.
