It is barely a year since a story was written on illegal demolition of structures at Deep Sea slum. On the wee hours of the 25th September 2005, a group of about 100 hired youth and a city council bulldozer were on a mission to flatten the largest informal settlement in Consolata Shrine Parish. More than 200 structures and property worth thousands of shillings were destroyed. The terror, disorder and pandemonium that engulfed the village provided an opportunity for looters to grab whatever valuable item they came across: household items, food stuff, children clothes including school uniforms, beddings, furniture and even money. |

MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESSPOPE BENEDICT XVIFOR THE CELEBRATION OF THEWORLD DAY OF PEACE
The human person, the heart of peace
1. At the beginning of the new year, I wish to extend prayerful good wishes for peace to Governments, leaders of nations and all men and women of good will. In a special way, I invoke peace upon all those experiencing pain and suffering, those living under the threat of violence and armed aggression, and those who await their human and social emancipation, having had their dignity trampled upon.
I invoke peace upon children, who by their innocence enrich humanity with goodness and hope, and by their sufferings compel us all to work for justice and peace. Out of concern for children, especially those whose future is compromised by exploitation and the malice of unscrupulous adults.

The Catholic bishops of Eastern Africa have backed an initiative by governments to promote peace in Africa’s war-battered Great Lake’s Region. Six presidents attended the second summit of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, which ended today with the signing of a pact binding member states to promote security, stability, good governance and economic development. Following is the full statement issued today by the region’s Catholic bishops in support of the initiative: |

(This is a letter sent to the editor of The Tablet, by Fr Giovanni Scudiero, imc)
Dear Editor, I welcome Michael Quinlan’s contribution to the renewed debate around the issue of nuclear weapons. However, I feel sad in noticing that his “inexorable logic” seems to be stuck within a mindset reminiscent of times past and historical contexts that no longer apply. He recycles his old arguments in favour of deterrence based on ”balance of terror”, except that this time he stretches them further to justify envisaging “ uses [emphasis mine] of nuclear weapons that would gravely damage an aggressor state by assailing legitimate targets while killing as few non-combatants as possible, and even during the Cold War Western planning moved in that direction… [emphasis mine] ”. |
