The journey of our human growth and our Christian maturity

About fifteen months ago, when surfing the net, by chance, Martin came in contact with the “World Social Forum” (WSF). Talking with his friends and relatives, he realised that, they too, were not aware of such gathering, or, worse, confused this gathering with other “forums” especially those related just to economic matters and multinationals.

Chile: Church in region needs to examine conscience

The president of the Bishops’ Conference of Chile, Bishop Alejandro Goic, said during a press conference this week that the Catholic Church in Latin America needs to sincerely examine its conscience in order to determine why Catholics are not on the forefront of social justice reform.

In an interview with the Italian news agency ANSA, Bishop Goic recalled the discourse of Pope Benedict XVI upon inaugurating the V General Conference of the Latin American Bishops, in which he pointed out “the injustices of the continent that cry out to heaven and cause us pain, as this is a majority Catholic country.”

International Day of the World’s Indigenous People

The world’s 370 million indigenous people continue to suffer discrimination, marginalization, extreme poverty and conflict.

In a message marking the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People, observed each year on 9 August, Mr. Ban Ki-moon (UN Secretary-General) pointed out that while the occasion is a time to “celebrate the contributions that indigenous peoples make to humanity through their rich civilizations,” it is also important to remember the critical issues they grapple with daily.

South Africa: Church Outlines Pastoral Priorities to Better Christian

A pastoral forum held examined ways to revitalize the Catholic faith in southern Africa.

The forum brought together the laity, bishops, clergy and religious from all the dioceses of the Southern African Catholic Bishops Conference (South Africa, Botswana and Swaziland).

Overall, the forum called for relevant and contextual faith formation of Christians at every level of life.

UNICEF calls for protection of Somalia's children

UNICEF remains distressed at the impact that violence is having on children in Mogadishu and calls on all parties to the conflict to ensure the safety of civilians, especially children. At least 20 children have died in the past month as a result of ongoing conflict within the Somali capital, while many others are among the hundreds of thousands to have fled the city in recent months. The majority of the displaced are children, women and the elderly.
