Some 13,500 children in central and southern Somalia are severely malnourished and at risk of dying, while nearly 70,000 others suffer from malnutrition, according to a new survey by the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and its partners in the strife-torn and flood- and drought-hit Horn of Africa country.

“These children urgently require attention to ensure that they survive,” UNICEF country representative Christian Balslev-Olesen said. “UNICEF is very concerned that their numbers might increase with continued civil strife, limited humanitarian access to these areas, food insecurity and a depressed economy.”

New figures show solid progress on child survival, including a decline in the annual number of under-five deaths, according to UNICEF. Global child deaths have reached a record low, falling below 10 million per year to 9.7 million, down from almost 13 million in 1990.

“This is an historic moment,” said UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman. “More children are surviving today than ever before. Now we must build on this public health success to push for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.”

Churches in Zimbabwe’s second largest city, Bulawayo, are launching emergency distributions of water and warn of ‘disastrous’ shortages that could lead to diseases like cholera.

“Many people in western areas have had virtually no water for a whole month. There are already cases of diarrhoea and we are facing a crisis,” said Pastor Promise Manceda, one of the leaders of Churches in Bulawayo, a network of more than 70 congregations across the city.

The churches report that three of the five dams supplying the city’s population of 700,000 have run out of water, with the fourth due to run dry later this month.

As you may know, Wonji Catholic Church is run by our Congregation, IMC, since 1980. We are serving God in different sectors, such as Pastoral and social development projects.

Historically, Ethiopia has its own calendar which is completely different from the universe. For example, currently we are in the month of August 2007. With regard to the Ethiopian calendar, it is the month of NAHASE 1999. On the 21st of NAHASE of each year, the Parishioners, friends, Priests, Sisters, Guests, why not Bishop, from respective places, always attend to the celebration of the annual Feast of Wonji Catholic Church.

The light of Christ shines upon all!

We, Christian pilgrims from all over Europe and beyond, witness to the transforming power of this light, which is stronger than darkness, and we proclaim it as all-embracing hope for our Churches, for all of Europe and for the entire world.

In the name of our Triune God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we have assembled in the city of Sibiu, Romania (4th-9th September 2007). This third European Ecumenical Assembly was marked especially by the richness of Orthodox spirituality and tradition. We recall and renew the serious commitments we already made in Basel and Graz and we regret that, up to now, we have failed to fulfil some of them. However, our confidence in the transforming energy of the light of Christ is stronger than the darkness of resignation, fatalism, fear and indifference.
