AFRICA: US Catholics Give Over Half a Million Dollars for Projects

The Catholic Church in the United States will give more than half a million dollars to 51 programs in Africa, the first ever grants from the bishops’ Pastoral Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa.

The awards were announced by Bishop John H. Ricard, SSJ, Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee for the Church in Africa. The awards will support a range of pastoral activities including pastoral care, formation of seminarians and clergy, Catholic education, youth ministry, catechesis and social communications.

It was an opportunity to highlight and celebrate Africa and her social movements with reflective thinking, democratic debate of ideas, and a free exchange of experiences. The WSF is not just an event - it is a process of seeking and building alternatives in a world dominated by unbridled capitalism.

The outspoken Catholic archbishop of Bulawayo Pius Ncube has urged President Robert Mugabe to step down as the country faces deepening political and economic woes.

“Mugabe is a man who is a megalomaniac. He loves power, he lives for power. Even his own party is appealing to him to step down. Zimbabweans are desperate to offer him anything [for him] to relinquish power,” IPS quotes him as telling journalists in Johannesburg, Tuesday.

The Holy See moved to reassure dismayed non-Catholics that a recent document reasserting the primacy of the Catholic Church was not meant to reverse gains made in ecumenical relations.

Protestants and evangelicals around the world reacted sharply to the document, made public on Tuesday, which stated that it is only the Catholic Church that has all the elements that Jesus Christ himself instituted.

South Africa: Aids Sees Plunge in Growth Rate Population

The population growth rate in South Africa has taken a drastic plunge in recent years, with HIV/Aids-related deaths playing a lead role in the decline, say experts.
 
Statistics South Africa released its latest findings, which show that the population growth in the country has slowed down to 6.4% since 2001.

This is a significant drop from the 10.4% growth rate between 1996 and 2001.
 
The mid-year population estimates further show that 11% of the recently estimated 47.9 million people in South Africa are infected with the HIV virus.
