Egypt: Second mysterious fire destroys coptic catholic church

Fire has destroyed a Coptic Catholic church in the Egyptian town of Kafr el Sheij, just three weeks after another church was burned in the country because of conflicts between Christians and Muslims.

The Catholic bishops in Egypt called on the government to provide greater security for Christians. According to the newspaper Al Ahram, the blaze last week required emergency response from eight fire trucks in order to put it out.

The car took another turn. This time I was sure that the next turn would be at the Sagana Parish. We had left Nairobi at half past seven and in roughly an hour’s time were already in Sagana, where the celebrations of the Consolata feast were to take place. The weather had not changed much over the few previous weeks and there were signs that it would be getting chillier. As we arrived at Bethany house, it was evident that the preparations were complete, though a few novices could be spotted here and there making final confirmation that all was well.

WCC calls on the UN to end violence in Zimbabwe

In a letter to the UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, the World Council of Churches (WCC) has expressed continued concern about the situation in Zimbabwe and asked the world body to utilize its resources to assure an end to pre-election violence in the southern African country and a free and fair election on 27 June.

The letter, which comes from the WCC general secretary, Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia, states the dismay of the council and its member churches "at the news of the brutality meted out by police and other government forces in Zimbabwe."
