80. Enucleation of the orientation

The aim of the charism of the Institute is evangelization ad gentes even in its geographic meaning (cf. RM 37)). In this vast horizon, obviously, some choices have to be made, and priorities selected. The XGC has indicated five areas which the present Chapter confirms: non-Christians, urban poverties, ethnic minorities, qualified services to the local churches and justice and peace. (cf. XGC 43-47).

In those five areas other dimensions are included which directly touch our mission such as: the means of social communication, the world of politics and culture, the youth, the immigrants and pandemics such as AIDS, malaria… (cf. XGC 46).

At the continental level we have the possibility through our meetings of detecting and paying attention to situations which are particularly urgent.

81. Aspects which motivate the orientation

1. Fidelity to our charism expressed by the tradition of the Institute.

2. Attention to the local and global situation.

3. Prophetism which should characterize religious life.

4. Poverty, exclusion and violence produced by the political neo-liberal systems and the phenomenon of globalization.

82. Practical proposals

1. At the level of the continents the choice of certain priorities that are necessary for us to assume are to be kept in mind, and adequate and concrete programs of action are to be implemented.

2. Make good use of the IMC members prepared to meet these mission challenges, and prepare even more members so that they may become involved in the projects of the Institute and assist the confreres.

3. Lay experts should be actively sought out for special assistance.

4. Through ongoing formation, the missionaries should be helped to understand these trends, and to deepen their knowledge of the issues.
