A letter of support to the struggle of indigenous people of Raposa Serra do Sol PDF Print E-mail

After three years of the signing of the presidential decree homologating the Indigenous Land Raposa Serra do Sol (RSS) the announcement of the operation, termed as UPTAKON 3, to expel the non-indigenous from the homologated area made us very happy. We felt the commitment of the Federal Government to guarantee the rights of these indigenous people which are already guaranteed by the Brazilian constitution.

On 9th of April we got shocked by the decision of the Supreme Federal Tribunal, of suspending the operation aimed at removing the invaders once and for all.

We vehemently repudiate this decision that came to benefit a group of a few rice-growers and stimulate more violence against 18,992 indigenous that lives in 194 communities in the area. Since the land was homologated on 15th of April of 2005, a centre of formation of leaders was totally destroyed, the officers of federal police were kidnapped, bridges were burned, houses were set on fire, roads were blocked, hundreds of threats and aggressions were made but no punishment of the criminals has happened. Therefore, we express all our indignation especially on the way the process of removal of the invaders is being carried out, by the competent authorities. Due to their slowness, laxity and omissions, they allow successive attacks against the rights of the indigenous people.

We hope there will be an immediate resumption of the Opertation Upatakon 3, removing all the invaders from the indigenous land Raposa Serra do Sol, and the land be respected in its integrity of T.I.RSS according to the “document” of the ministry of Justice and the presidential decree of homologation.

We believe the Brazilian State will not retreat from its duty of honoring the law and of punishing the groups and people that rise against the democracy and federal constitution with the sole aim of protecting the political and economical interests.
