The Catholic Archbishop of Nairobi John Njue is among cardinals from five regions of the world elected to the governing committee of an international Catholic organisation dealing with migrants.
Njue was elected at the 107th governing committee of the Geneva-based International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC). Another African cleric appointed to the committee was Mgr. Dr. Francis Ndamira of Uganda.
ICMC serves and protects uprooted peoples - refugees, internally displaced persons and migrants worldwide, regardless of faith, race, ethnicity or nationality. The organisation received formal Vatican recognition in June.
Other newly elected ICMC governing committee members include Cardinal Christoph Schonborn, Archbishop of Vienna (Austria), representative for Europe; Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga, Archbishop of Tegucigalpa (Honduras) and President of Caritas Internationalis, representative for Latin America; Cardinal George Pell, Archbishop of Sydney (Australia), representative of Oceania, and the Greek Melkite Patriarch Gregorios III Latham, of Damascus (Syria), representative for the Middle East.
The others are Bishop Precioso Cantillas, Bishop of Maasin (Philippines), representative for Asia; Bishop Sancasimiro Angel Fernandez, Bishop of Quesada (Costa Rica), representative of Latin America, and Archbishop Francois Gayot, Archbishop Emeritus of Cap Haitien (Haiti), counsellor. |
